I love movies. Not just for the entertainment value, but the conceptual exploration, and (occasionally) visionary insight.

And, you have to love the rich supply of metaphor! I constantly find myself referring to movie metaphor. What a succinct and colorful way to express related concepts!

Minority Report

Minority Report was a good flick, but disappointing from a scientific viewpoint.  But, I expect too much.

Both my son and I felt that Spielberg once again diluted (worse than he did for AI) an opportunity to realistically extrapolate our future.  Our future is so incredibly rich in possibilities, we don't need more of the traditional psychic bs.

But, I have to acknowledge that each movie like this awakens more people to our largely unrecognized near future, and the incumbent responsibilities.

I would add to the review that the artificial spiders were more advanced than everything else in the movie, except (perhaps) the bio-engineered plants.  The spiders would have to have NanoTech, advanced MEMS, and a more than rudimentary AI intelligence to exist as portrayed!

The 'plants' did show animal-level intelligence and motility, a highly advanced form of bio-engineering!

A.I.

A.I. was 'Most Excellent', though quite diluted by overdoing the human emotional aspects.  AIs will NOT think or act like humans, unless they pretend to!  But, the emotional emphasis strongly illustrated the still mostly unrecognized reality of AI ethics.  We will have to face that sooner than most realize!

The awesomely profound aspect was at the end...

I guarantee that many knowledgeable Sci-Fi fans missed the true meaning of the entities that wakened 'David'!  They were NOT aliens, but Post-Humans !  I don't remember any movie, ever, that featured 'technically believable' Post-Humans.  Just to see them portrayed was worth watching the movie!

Remember the line from Jude Law's 'Mecha' character:  "When the end comes, all that will be left... is US." ?  That's your clue.

Seeing it again on DVD, I'm still moved to joyful tears... because when the music envelopes the Post-Humans as they zoom down into the glacial archeological dig... I hope someday that will be me.

The 6th Day

The 6th Day is a must see... a lot better than I expected!  It is a very significant movie... and illustrates what may be reality before we know it!  Awesome.

Mind scanning and cloning are utterly profound and very real technologies;  though still rudimentary, both are already being developed.

Copying a mind and downloading it to a new clone body (virtual immortality) won't happen that simply, but the 6th Day extrapolates some of the philosophical and ethical dilemmas we already face.

Red Planet

Red Planet was excellent... very well done. The robot (Amee) will haunt my mind for years... and the AI computer on the main ship (Lucille) was an interesting example of our near future.  Carrie-Anne Moss is certainly firmly established as a female Sci-Fi star!  A most excellent movie.
