email setup instructions
Microsoft Outlook 2002 and higher
Incoming Mail Setup
- Open Outlook and click "Tools" then "Email Accounts", select "View or change existing email accounts" and click "Next".
- Highlight the account you wish to modify and click "Change".
- Enter the following in the boxes:
- Your Name: first and last name
- Email address: full email address (YourUsername@fairpoint.net)
- Incoming mail server: pop3.fairpoint.net
- Outgoing mail server: smtpauth.fairpoint.net
- User Name: full email address (YourUsername@fairpoint.net)
- Password: YourPassword
- Click "Test Account Settings", make sure "Log onto incoming mail server has a green check mark and the status shows "Completed".
- Click "Next" and then "Finish".
Outgoing Mail Setup
- From the menu, select Tools, then E-mail Accounts.
- Under E-mail, select "View or change existing e-mail accounts" and then click Next.
- Choose your Fairpoint.net account and Click Next.
- Click on Change.
- Make sure the box named "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is not checked, then click on More Settings.
- Put a check in the box for "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication", and for "Use same settings as my incoming mail server".
- Click OK, Next, and Finish to close out of all dialog boxes and save your changes.

Microsoft Outlook Express
- Open Outlook Express, go to the "Tools" menu (if you get other pop-up screens when opening Outlook Express, click the cancel button next to them until you can click on the "Tools" menu), and click on "Accounts..."
- When the "Internet Accounts" window appears, click on the "Mail" tab. Click and hold on the "Add" button, moving your pointer over the "Mail..." label and release the mouse button.
- The "Internet Connection Wizard" dialog starts, begin filling out the information it asks for: First, the name you want to appear on all your e-mails you send to people. Then click "Next".
- Then enter in your E-mail Address. The general form for a FairPoint.net address is @fairpoint.net. Then click "Next".
- Next, enter the e-mail server information as is shown below:
- Incoming mail server: pop3.fairpoint.net
- Outgoing mail server: smtpauth.fairpoint.net
- Then Click "Next".
- Now, enter your full Email address in the Account name field, and the password for your e-mail account (you don't have to put in the password, but if you do, it will be automatically sent to the e-mail server everytime you connect to it so long as the check is in the box next to "Remember Password"). Then click "Next".
- You should then end up at a window where "Finish" is an option. Click "Finish".
- Now we are back to the "Internet Accounts" window, and you should see the account we just created appear there (make sure you're still on the "Mail" tab if it does not).
- Click once on the account you just created, then click on the "Properties" button, you will see a window appear titled "YourUserID@fairpoint.net Properties" that has many tabs along the top. Click on the one that says "Servers". Verify that "My server requires authentication" is checked.
- Click on the "Settings" button.
- Make sure that you check "Log on using:" and you fill in your username (YourUserID@fairpoint.net) and password.
- Click "OK" in this properties window, then "Close" in the "Internet Accounts" window. Finally, in the main Outlook Express window, answer "Yes" to the dialog box that asks if you want to download files from the mail server you just added.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2
- Open Thunderbird and click "Tools" in the menu bar, then select "Account Settings."
- In the "Account Settings" window, click on "Add Account".
- When the "Account Wizard" window appears, select the "E-mail account" option, then click "Next".
- Fill in "Your Name:" (the name you want to be displayed on all e-mails you send) and "E-mail Address:". The general form for a FairPoint.net address is YourUserID>@fairpoint.net. Then click "Next".
- At the "Server Information" window, click the circle next to "POP". In the "Incoming Server:" field enter "pop3.fairpoint.net". In the "Outgoing Server" field enter "smtpauth.fairpoint.net". Click "Next".
- Both the "Incoming User Name" and "Outgoing User Name" fields must contain your full email address. If they do not, enter your full email address in both fields, then click "Next".
- The "Account Name" field should be filled with your e-mail address. The account name is used only to identify your account within Thunderbird. You may leave this value at it's default or change it to anything you wish. When ready, click "Next".
- At the "Account Settings" window, review the account settings or accuracy. Use the "Back" button to return and correct any errors. When the settings are correct, click "Finish".
- Click once on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" in the left-hand window, and click the "Edit" button. At the SMTP Server screen, complete the fields so that they appear as described below:
- Server Name: smtpauth.fairpoint.net
- Port: 25
- Use name and password: checked
- Username: YourUserID@fairpoint.net
- Use secure connection: No
- Click "OK" out of the Accounts Settings window.
- Click "Get Mail" in the upper left hand corner of the Thunderbird window.
- Enter your password into the password windows and Click "OK". If you would like Thunderbird to save your password check the box for "Use Password Manager to remember this password."
- Click folder named "Inbox" in the left side pane and your mail should now displayed in the main window.

Apple Mail 1.2.5 for Macintosh OS X
- Open Mail, go to the "Mail" menu (if you get other pop-up screens when opening Mail, close them until you can click on the "Mail" menu), and click on "Preferences..."
- When the "Accounts" window appears, the Check for new mail pull-down menu should be set to at least 15 minutes. Change this if it is set to check more frequently. Click on the "Add Account" button.
- In the "Account Information" tab, choose Account Type from the pull-down menu and select "POP".
- The remaining settings should be as follows:
- Description:
- Email Address: YourUserID@fairpoint.net
- Full Name:
- Incoming Mail Server: pop3.fairpoint.net
- User Name: YourUserID@fairpoint.net
- Password: (optional)
- To set Outgoing Mail Server and its variety of settings, click the "Options" button.
- Make the following settings in the SMTP Server Options window:
- Outgoing Mail Server: smtpauth.fairpoint.net
- Authentication: Password
- User Name: YourUserID@fairpoint.net
- Password: (optional)
- In the Advanced tab, the settings should be as follows:
- Enable this account should be checked.
- Include when automatically checking for new mail should be checked.
- Click OK.
