2005 Betts Family Reunion

Dedicated to

Foynelle Betts Barineau

To Foy Nelle From Papa

By:

Jennie Betts Dickenson

While down in the swamp walking around

Studying nature and whistling a song.

I found a big hickory tree standing so straight

To get my hands on it I could hardly wait.

I hurried to the house, got axe and saw

Hauled it up with my old “Hee-Haw”.

I sat and split, slat after slat,

I tho’t of this and I tho’t of that.

My fancy wandered along to Foy Nelle.

The picture I saw I’ll try to tell.

I could lift up my eyes when-ere I will

And fancy I saw her just over the hill.

This hamper I was weaving to carry your wash,

Right now may be large, but later – my gosh!

The troops I saw hopping and skipping along

Why! I almost quit whistling and forgot my song.

A husky little boy, so lean and lank

Am sure he never deserved a spank.

A black-haired girl, eyes of brown

Teeth like pearl, and face most round.

First they came singly –

Then I had the blues.

I knew what it was to have them by two’s.

I tho’t I’d have to quit, my hands got shakey

I couldn’t make a split.

I made it wider and a little more deep

For in this hamper one might have to sleep.

Well – it will hold a lot of little clothes

As well as your’s and good ole Mose.

But if you need one later, that will hold more,

Back to the swamp a hunting I’ll go.
