The Consequence Of Dreaming
by Darren Stone

The boats in South Marina
Will sit still another day.
I thought once I should take her there;
Just shallow talk in salty air.
I lost the nerve to ask her;
Then I watched her walk away.

She moved with ease in crowded rooms -
Quite opposite from me;
Slow desert rain and moonlit stream
Provide the backdrop for my dreams.
Those dreams fade in my solitude,
And mock me in my sleep.

I pictured us one summer
Playing cloud games from the lawn, but
She never stopped to hear me sing,
Or do my "Wicked Witch" routine -
We never had those Mai-Tais,
She just smiled and moved along.

I priced a trip to Denver once -
Snow angels in my head.
But we would never get so close;
It's true I daydream more than most.
I settled for a postcard
When she went with him instead.

The boats in South Marina
Will sit still another day.
Perhaps the next romantic boy
Will have the fortune to enjoy
Sun sparkles on the water,
And the girl that got away.
