ICP / Revolution Press - Revision Policy Charges Effective 4/17/2010

The production process of a book follows a series of specific design steps, all of which need to be completed in a specific order to ensure a smooth publishing process for not only the author, but the publisher / designers involved in every step of the project.

The design steps for publishing a book are the following:

- Write the text
- Have the text edited / proofread
- Make ALL corrections / re-writes to text after being edited
- Submit text for design and creation (typesetting)
- Cover design and creation of book
- Submission of Text and Cover files to premedia
- Proof copy is generated.

This order of operations was designed to minimize the time required in the publishing process and, when followed in sequence, results in ICP being able to produce a high quality title in a relatively short period of time.

However, if any of the above steps are taken out of order, this drastically increases the time and energy required for each title, and when you consider our production schedule of multiple titles at once, that work load becomes exponential, overnight. Let me share this example: (which is something we are currently facing with several titles at once)

An author submits their text and we begin typesetting / page design for that title. An initial text sample is created and sent to the author for approval or correction. Once approved, the remaining textblock is completed according to that page design, and the full textblock is sent to the author for approval.

At this point, the author should ONLY be looking at page design, which is HOW the text is displayed on the page and HOW the material is presented. But here's what happens: The author begins editing their words. They decide THIS word would be sound better than THAT word. They see how they could improve the sentence structure here or the perhaps how it could be better if something was taken from HERE and MOVED over to there... etc ... then, rather than receiving an approval, or correction list to the page layout, we receive a Word document containing PAGES of line by line text edits to be changed throughout the entire book. And every round of these revisions result in a domino effect that adds hours of extremely detailed work for the designer.

These revisions drastically increase each title's total production time, while adversely affecting our projected production schedule for all other titles. These revisions (at any stage of production) are not something for which ICP has ever charged, but it is no longer something we can afford to do for free, and effective immediately the following changes to our production charges will go into effect:

- Each round of textblock revisions will increase the textblock creation charge. If the initial quote is $2.00 per page and one round of text changes is requested by the author, textblock creation charges may increase to $2.25 per page. The actual amount will be decided by the designer, and the author will be presented with the updated increase amount per page before any revisions begin.

- Charges will apply, according to time, to any revisions made to book covers which have been approved for production. (This is in addition to the re-submission fee for files charged by our distributor)

- Charges will apply, according to a cost per page increase, to any revisions made to textblocks of books already approved for production. (This is in addition to the re-submission fee for files charged by our distributor)
