Globe  GIS and the KRD

Irrigation Entities Sample

The KRD has had a GIS program since 1994. What is a GIS? GIS stands for Geographic Information System. A GIS is a computer system designed to input, store, manage, manipulate, analyze, visualize, and output spatial data. The KRD uses Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) software, which was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and ArcView software, a product of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).

A GIS stores information about the real world as a collection of thematic layers that are linked together by a shared coordinate system. Examples of the layers that the KRD uses are: KRD service area, KRD canals and laterals, other hydrology, roads, parcels, and wetlands. ArcView can easily put these layers together to create maps centered on any location, at any scale, and showing selected information symbolized in a way to emphasize specific characteristics. The process of making maps with GIS is much more flexible and less time consuming than with traditional manual or automated cartographic approaches.

From the beginning of the KRD’s GIS program, we have received invaluable help from National Consortium for Rural Geospatial Innovations (RGIS) at Central Washington University. We are able to solve problems outside of the KRD’s software abilities at CWU’s GIS lab.   To contact RGIS e-mail csi@cwu.edu.

Wetlands Sample

A regional GIS user group has been organized for Ellensburg/Kittitas County.   The purpose of the group is to bring together GIS users and potential users in the region to exchange ideas, data, and data sources.  For more information e-mail the GIS Lab Director, Dr. Bruce Davis at davisb@cwu.edu.  Visit the new website www.cwu.edu/~gishome/gisusergroup/
