Information Search Styles a model

The students followed different "paths" in their information seeking journeys that represent varied
Information Search Styles, some of which also reflected gender tendencies. To best describe these experiences, a matrix was constructed
to depict a hypothetical model of 9 Information Search Styles (ISS). The ISS model is based on level of focus formulation
(Lost (& Wanderers), Tourists, and Navigators) and level of involvement (Reluctant, Detached, and Involved).
These styles were related to the preferences and abilities of the students, the requirements of the
assignment or information need, and differences in developmental level and epistemological stance.
The model defines success to include information exploration, involvement, and affective state as well as
the traditional success indicated by focus formulation alone.
Several search styles evidenced gender tendencies. However, gender representation was balanced in the search
styles of highly successful students--those who were detached from their topics but formulated
a clear focus, the Detached Navigators, and those who were both involved
with their topics and also clearly focused, the Involved Navigators.
