Interests in several areas: - gender issues (citation)
- the complex process experience of real
people using information
led to my dissertation study (abstract
and diagram of the resultant model) "Gender in the Information
Search Process: An Exploratory Study of Student Experience."
The high school students in the study varied in how well they were able to formulate a focus (develop a point or unique personal perspective on a topic)
and in how involved they became in their topics and the process itself. Finding a "point"
(Kuhlthau's focus formulation and more) is a lot like the expression of "voice"(citation),
Carol Gilligan's concept. The ability to find or form a point was equally available to both males and females in the study. Involvement is also related to what I call information aliteracy
(citation),
the lack of desire to use ideas and information. The information seeking journey can be
as important as the destination.
What's the Point? The Elusive Focus provides an analysis of the follow-up studies of a group of the student participants in the dissertation
study.

Moving woes
My Granny's antique bed and dresser became part of Untied Van Lines'
trail of broken furniture (alas,
no trail for the lost stuff). There is a wonderful web site for another Untied company, the airline,
that points out their lack of customer service. Maybe it's in the name? Beware!
And then there was UHaul, when we decided to do it ourselves. More on that adventure elsewhere. Contact me.
