Partnership for the Preservation of the Downeast Lakes Watershed

Are you aware that a commercial wind power project is slated for Bowers Mt. in Carroll?
The project is currently in a meteorological testing mode with two of the four planned 8" in diameter and 197 feet tall test towers already erected and operating.

This development is being pursued by “Champlain LLC”, a direct subsidiary of "First Wind", the Massachusetts developer who constructed the Mars Hill and Stetson Mt. projects. They just broke ground a couple of weeks ago for Stetson II and have all initial approvals to build the Rocky Dundee / Rollins Mt. project that will encompass ridgelines in Burlington, Lincoln, Lee, Winn and Mattawamkeag.

These are not small projects. They average 25-40 wind turbines per project site. While the test towers now sitting on Bowers Mt. are barely visible, the 400 ft. permanent wind turbines/towers will dominate the landscape.

If you're having a hard time visualizing what that would look like, think of it as being the equivalent to a thin 40 story skyscraper sitting on top of this 1100' ridgeline! Try to imagine a long line of these metal behemoths desecrating the ridgeline and directly overshadowing our scenic lands and lake shores.

Bowers Mountain is about 3 miles north of Duck Lake. The towers will be closest to and directly overshadow the following lakes:
They will be visible from many other lakes in this chain including:
  • West Grand Lake
  • Horseshoe Lake
  • Sysladobsis Lake                                                                                           40 Story Building

The lifeblood of Grand Lake Stream Watershed is the natural beauty of the area and the recreational opportunities that attract people from all over the world to come and visit/fish this watershed. Any attempts to negatively impact these natural resources are taken very seriously by its businesses and property owners.

Won't you help us see that this never happens?
