WORKSHOPS AND DEMONSTRATIONS

Workshop/Demonstration: A number of different puppet types are shown. Children get to work a rod puppet from Ceylon, shadow puppets from Java, and a variety of marionettes from several different cultures. Amusing histories, interesting background information. Hands on experience. (50 minutes) (Grades 3, 4)

PUPPET VARIETY

Demonstration: Durable puppets from newspaper and flour paste. Several methods that can be done by both children and adults. Techniques shown are geared to age level. (50 minutes) (Grades 4,5, adult)

PAPIER MACHE

Demonstration: How to make puppets from easily obtained household materials. Recycle egg cartons, socks, gloves, cereal boxes, plastic bottles. (30 minutes) (Grades K,1,2,3,4)

PUPPET AT HOME

Workshop: Use of hands to express emotion and tell stories. Basic puppet manipulation. Children play theater games that stress cooperation and observation. (30 minutes) (Grades K,1,2,3,4)

THEATERPLAY

Workshop/Demonstration: Children see, feel, and use genuine South Indian shadow puppets. They learn how to make their own paper versions and use the puppeteers own shadow puppets to perform a well-known story. (45-60 minutes) (Grades 4,5,6)

SHADOW PUPPETS

Workshop: Cooperation and creatively are called on when a class is divided into groups and each group produces and operates a sizable puppet or puppet panorama often with unique and surprising features. (2-3 hours) (Grade 6 and over, Adult)

INSTANT MAGIC

Workshop: With the puppeteer's know-how and equipment, and your easily obtained household materials, children can make their own durable puppets at one sitting. No drying time required. (2-4 hours depending on kinds of puppets, number and ages of children). (Grades K,1,2,3,4)

TEACHERS/ADULTS

Workshop and/or Demonstration: Types of puppets, staging. Questions answered, problems addressed. (1-3 hours)

Puppeteer can incorporate the art of poetry to enhance your school or grade project whether it is language, theater arts, science, music appreciation, social or environmental studies, even elementary physics. (1 week - indefinite) (Usually Grades 4, 5. Some work with other grades possible.)
