Fire Pit and Circle

INTRODUCTION

The very first of the things I built out back, the Fire Pit is set several inches into the ground, and is stone-lined and -floored. In Spring 2007 the Fire Circle area received a lot of leveling work, thanks to volunteer labor from Clan SamhainDell of Lewiston. A few yards away to the southwest, just outside the Circle area, there is an old green bathtub set into the ground to hold a quantity of water for use at the fire pit if need be. Just behind the water tub, is the stack of firewood and kindling. At the head of the tub there is a chest containing dry newspaper, and funnels and the jugs of citronella oil for the torches.

The Fire Circle is the largest ritual area here. It is surrounded by numerous metal "tiki torches" for general area lighting in the evenings. A large flat stone found on the property has been set up at the western edge of the Fire Pit to serve as the Altar. There are four small Quarter Altars set on the periphery of the Circle. If you have candle holders with glass chimneys, the chances that the candles will stay lit all the way through your ritual are increased.

This Grove receives direct sunlight for most of the daytime hours. During summer evenings, usually there is a breeze trending from the northwest towards the southeast across the property.

The Altar stone is on the near side of the fire pit. On the far side of the circle boundary, you can see a part of the Village Tenting area and the southern end of Tenting Area B.

DESCRIPTION

Fire Circle looking West

The leveling project for increasing the area of the Fire Circle is obviously not yet complete, here. At the top of the rise at the left edge of the photo is the Woodsplitting Hill area. The tree-line from center-top to the right edge is the western end of Tenting Area A.

Fire Circle looking North

From the left edge, to the center-top is the eastern end of Tenting Area A. In the background to the right of center, is where the woodpile ended up temporarily during the Fire Circle leveling project.

Possible Additional Improvements

Circle Boundaries

After the first ritual held after widening the Fire Circle area to approximately 40 feet, I have discovered that the number of torches which were sufficient to light it before is nowhere near enough now.

Proper pedestal-stands for the Quarter Alters, rather than the plant-pots which are making-do at present.

A triple-course of bricks laid on edge, set flush into the ground, to mark the periphery of the Circle Area Proper, connecting the present Quarter Altars.

Fire Pit

A set of Blacksmithed supports with a spit, for hanging cooking pots (or older-style vessels) over the Fire Pit for the purposes of cooking stews, and such.

A taller base to put the altar stone upon.
