In The Beginning

Stanley Coren has described cavaliers as Love Sponges, and that they are! They are also extremely adaptable and good natured.  They get along great with other dogs as long as they are raised in a calm, stable environment, and they are happy and eager to go anywhere their people want to take them.

Cavaliers are great with kids, but parents need to remember that cavaliers are toy dogs, and can be easily injured by being dropped or tripped over!

Cavaliers, kids, and sensible parents get along great, though!

I love the size of cavaliers.  They are small enough to be compact and convenient, never mind reasonable to feed! But, they are large enough and sturdy enough for long walks and hiking adventures outdoors.

One thing cavaliers are not good at is being left alone for long periods of time.  The breed has been bred for centuries specifically to crave companionship.  If you expect to work long days, go to meetings in the evening, and leave your cavalier home alone, you will have a sad, unhappy cavalier. Separation anxiety and problem behavior shouldn't surprise you in that kind of situation. Please pick a breed that will do better on its own.

Cavaliers range from average intelligence to extremely bright.  All do well in dog sports such as agility, rally, and obedience. They are very cooperative little guys, and while not blindly obedient, will try hard to do what you want when trained in a calm, sensible manner.

Many cavaliers perform very well and get high scores and/or consistent qualifying scores.

Another thing cavaliers are not good at is living outdoors.  Cavaliers were bred to be indoor companions and are not large enough to stay warm enough when living outdoors.  Cavaliers need to be indoor dogs to be healthy.  They will also get bored when left alone outdoors with no companionship.  They will get into trouble, and may run away looking for company.  They are also extremely vulnerable to being stolen, as they love everyone, and adapt quickly to a new home.
