The Farm's Story

People often ask if there is a story behind the name of the farm.

There surely is.

The name, Weeping Duck farm, is a tribute, a memorial to little Zippy, a beloved pet duck who was killed defending his tiny flock when it was attacked by abandoned stray dogs.  We were heartbroken, and we named the farm for Zippy so his memory would be always present and his selfless, courageous spirit continue to live among us.

Yoshi on my arm103Subsequently, we began adopting ducks who had been rescued by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Among the wild ducks, there are often some domestic ones for whom a safe home must be found, and that is when she calls us.  Our flock of ducks grows and diminishes over the years, males as well as females, some, unfortunately, crippled. Here they can live out their natural life–span.  Many of the ducks arrive very frightened and traumatized by their recent experience, but they soon adapt to the companionship of others of their own kind and enjoy swimming, grazing and dozing off in the shade on warm summer afternoons.

Sometimes when people ask why does the duck weep, we tell them that our clever little ducks read the newspapers, and more often than not, the news makes them cry.
