San Remo is a promising young stallion who was foaled in Germany by state premium mare Valente. His sire is Wolkentanz I, who many consider the best son of the legendary Hannovarian stallion, Weltmeyer. San Remo's talent for dressage was recognized in the 2001 during the Hannoverian Stallion Selection in Verden, where he finished fourth in the championship.

San Remo was exported to the Netherlands where he completed the KWPN stallion evaluation at Ermelo in 2002. The KWPN jury scored his walk as a 7 and trot and canter as 8. Dressage ability was scored as 8.5. Of the total group of 16 stallions rated by the of jury, San Remo was placed second for dressage ability.

In 2003, San Remo made a good impression in the Pavo Cup Finals where he finished fifth with rider Edward Gal. He also turned in a second place finish in the 2002/2003 KNHS/KWPN stallion competition at 's Hertogenbosh.
